Phimosis

Phimosis... a very common surgical condition in infancy and childhood!

  • The foreskin should become fully retractable by the age of 3 or 4 years.
... forcible retraction of the foreskin must always be avoided
... please see a paediatric surgeon if your child has a very thin urinary stream or you notice ballooning of the foreskin

  • It may be congenital or a result of trauma or inflammation

  • It may cause recurrent inflammation

  • Spontaneous separation of the foreskin from the glans may occur within the first years of life. Therefore circumcision in infants should only be performed in case of recurrent urinary infections (UTI) or if passing urine is causing problems.
